Important People




These are some the more important people of the Alamo Battle.

A defeated U.S. Congressman from Tennessee arrived in San Antonio de Bexar in February of 1836, to become the most well known hero to die at the Alamo. At age 49, Crockett led a Group of volunteers to the battle, entertaining the troops with his fiddle and famous story telling.

Jim came to San Antonio de Bexar in 1828 and soon married Ursula Verimendi, daughter of the Vice Governor of Coahuila. After deciding to fortify the Alamo instead of destroying it under Sam Huston's orders, Bowie and Travis were in conflict over command. Jim Bowie became commander of the volunteer forces while Col. Travis commanded the cavalry and army regulars. Jim made famous a knife that would forever after be called the Bowie knife.

The Napoleon of the West who became a dictator as President of Mexico. He led the Mexican Army to San Antonio de Bexar where he flew the "Flag of no quarter" in view of the Alamo, ordering all the defenders to be killed. Later captured at San Jacinto, he was set free to return to the Presidency of Mexico.

A Lawyer with an unhappy marriage left Alabama in 1831 for Texas, settling in Anahuac. Later He moved to San Felipe de Austin, where he opened a law office and raised a company of Volunteers. Travis led the volunteers to the Alamo in February of 1836, where he helped Reinforce the garrison, sharing command with Bowie. His famous letter "To the People of Texas and all Americans in the World" has been described as the most heroic document in American history.

An old Texas legend states that the Battle of San Jacinto could not have been won without the help of the Yellow Rose, a golden skinned slave girl known as Emily Morgan. Santa Anna immediately took a fancy to Emily, and she became a part of his loot. The Yellow Rose of Texas used her position in Santa Anna's camp to relay messages to General Sam Houston.

A 23 year old Tennessean came to Texas to fight for freedom and land he was never to receive. Asa borrowed his friend's, William Gant, great coat and rifle to fight in the famous Siege of the Alamo.
